Tema is participating in the Environmental Impact Assessment of the Resilient and Integrated Development Project in Greater Accra, Ghana, funded by the World Bank
They are responsible for planning, comprehensive review, and quality control
The severe flooding that occurred in 2015 in the Odaw River basin in the Greater Accra region of the Republic of Ghana caused damage to key infrastructure facilities, requiring among other major actions, the dredging of the river bed.
The community limited infrastructure for wastewater collection, segregation, treatment and recycling, along with inadequate waste management are some of the factors that made the flooding effects worse. Likewise, general poor low adherence and enforcement and lack of community awareness regarding waste and waterflows management were added factors to keep in mind.
Moving forward, in order to reduce flooding risks and improve solid waste management in the area, the Government of Ghana signed a financing agreement with the World Bank to implement the Resilient and Integrated Development Project in Greater Accra (GARID), managed by the Ministry of Works and Housing (MWH) of the Ghanaian government.
Tema is responsible for project planning, comprehensive review and quality control of the documentation, as well as the proposal for the management and transportation of dredged material from Lavender Hill, Odawna, Korlena, and Pasico to the final disposal sites in the Greater Accra region.
Tema is proudly part of this team, deploying its global capabilities to ensure the initiative objectives.
Tema’s Knowledge and technical capacity exchange
The work to be carried out in the Greater Accra region will involve the management and transportation of dredged material, as well as the implementation of flood mitigation measures.
The corresponding Environmental and Social Impact Assessment, commissioned by the Ministry of Works and Housing (MWH) of the Ghanaian government, was conducted by the Consortium composed of the Center for Environment and Health Research and Training (CEHRT), Tema Litoclen Group, and Holix Consult Limited.
Confirmed once more by this experience, Tema highlights the importance of fostering partnerships both in public and private spheres, an essential platform to promote knowledge exchange and enhance the overall initiative technical capacity.
With projects like this one, Tema can participate to valuable learning exchanges while having a highly positive impact over developing communities’ specific needs. Certainly, an experience to be repeated.
